Henry B. Koon, President

On July 1, 1974, Henry B. Koon became the fourth president of Northwest Mississippi Junior College since the
school was founded in 1927.

Change and progress were soon evident everywhere — from the landscape to the newly-redecorated buildings.
The new president brought many new ideas and fresh approaches to old problems with him when he took office.

Progress to President Koon meant student-oriented programs and a faculty and administration with goals to better
serve the needs of the student.

Top priority was given to recruiting during July and August with emphasis placed on the student who rated high
academically. The results of the recruiting program and other programs directed toward the student during the fall
semester were reflected in the enrollment for the spring semester. For the first time in four years, the spring enroll-
ment showed an increase over the previous year.

A new era of progress had begun at Northwest.

COACH'S STATEMENT:

"The total athletic program at Northwest is, without a
doubt, one of the best in the sixteen member junior college
association. The year 1974 brought us winning teams in all
four major sports. The football program was successful in
the fact that the past two seasons have both compiled
winning records, which has not been done since 1968. Out
of the thirteen team junior college football league we
finished with the fourth best overall record in the league
and the number three place team in the North Division.

"I think the total program at NWJC is well on its way to
being second to none. I think the credit goes to a fine
student body, an outstanding faculty, an excellent group
of young men and assistant coaches, and the leadership of
a progressive and concerned administration."

Northwest 12

The Rangers' 1974 season had hopes for a

winning start, but it proved to be a setback due

to fumbles, mistakes, and bad kicks.

The team never really got a start on the

offense because of the abundance of problems.

Poor kicking, in addition to the mistakes, help

insure a loss.

Defense was the only bright aspect of the

game as the ranger defense hoped for another

chance.

Prey to
Mighty Rangers

The Northwest Rangers picked up their first
victory in a 28-7 battle with the Northeast
Tigers.

Recovered fumbles, interceptions, and
touchdown passes highlighted the victory. First
quarter action was purely a kicking exhibition
until Robert Akins intercepted a NE pass. Early
in the second quarter the Ranger defense
recovered a safety.

Ricky Taylor scored the first touchdown. W.
L. Johnson scored on a handoff from Chris
Childress, and Greg Rogers scored twice for the
Rangers.

In a game dominated by hard play and heavy penalties, the Rangers
were downed 7-6 by the nation's number one junior college team, the East
Mississippi Lions. Although called for almost 100 yards in penalties, the
Rangers put together one of the best efforts shown against the Lions.

Hard blocks and good football caused mistakes on both teams. Neither
team scored in the first quarter. A second quarter quarterback sneak gave
the Lions the edge at the half of 7-0.

The third quarter turned into a repeat of the first. Amid the rain of the
fourth quarter quarterback Chris Childress went over from the two yard
line for the score. A two point try was missed, making the final score 7-6.

Hinds
Northwest

The Ranger offense just couldn't "get it going" as the
Hinds Eagles defeated them by a score of 7-0. The Ranger
runningbacks totaled 150 yards rushing, yet the score just
wouldn't come.

First quarter action was completely defensive for both
teams. The Rangers and the Eagles were both plagued by
fumbles and penalties, and the first half ended with the
Eagles leading 7-0.

Northwest got its first break in the third quarter when
the defensive team forced a fumble and recovered. This
break and an interception by James Thompson, which
started a drive to the one-yard line again proved no good.
The game ended with Hinds ahead 7-0.

The sun finally shone on the Rangers as they defeated the
Trojans 9-0.

First quarter action started with two major breaks for the
Rangers. The Rangers won the toss and elected to receive. The
Trojans kicked off twice, both times out of bounds, which gave
the Rangers better field position for the third kickoff. The
Ranger defensive team pulled together and blocked a Trojan
field goal. First quarter ended with the score 0-0.

Joey Dobbs kicked a 30 yard field goal putting NW in front 3-
0. Fred Carlisle gave the ball to Gregg Rogers who ran 76 yards
for another Ranger score. The half ended N W 9, Delta 0.

The Ranger defense continued to hold the Trojans scoreless
throughout the remaining two quarters. The game ended with
the final score of 9-0.

East Central 8

East Central's huge defensive line couldn't hold the
Rangers as they rolled over the Warriors 18-8.

The first score came early in the first quarter with Paul
Willett taking a handoff from Fred Carlisle on the three
yard line. With the point-after missed, the quarter ended
NW 6, EC 0. After a fumble and major penalties, the Rang-
ers moved on with another touchdown by Willett. The
great Ranger defense held the Warriors scoreless through-
out the first half.

In the third quarter, Carlisle handed off to Tommie
Green who made the third NW touchdown. East Central
scored on a fumble by NW. The fourth quarter saw many
fumbles and interceptions as it ended NW 18, EC 8.

The Rangers brought their record to 4-1 with a victory
over Gulf Coast Junior College. Tommie Green scored
both touchdowns for NW with runs of 22 and 72 yards.
Defense was the key for the Rangers as this was the sixth
time during the 1974 season that an opponent was held to
only one touchdown. Contact also was rough as defensive
tackle Gene Williams suffered a dislocated elbow, putting
him out for most of the remaining season.

Northwest 16

Holmes 12

The typical Homecoming spirit was exhibited by
both the fans and the team. Once again the Rangers
proved victorious against the Bulldogs from Holmes
Junior College.

Trailing 12-3 at the half the Rangers came back
during the second half full of life and fight. Tommie
Green gained 133 yards in this game rushing.

This victory gave the Rangers the third best season
record in junior college play. It was their fourth con-
secutive victory, being the first team since 1966 to
win four straight games.

The Rangers went into the game with

Itawamba hoping for a piece of the North

Division, but saw their hopes shattered by a

20-7 loss.

Turnovers once again were the dividing

factor in the game. Tommie Green scored the

only touchdown and gained 42 yards for the

night. The rest of the ballgame was dominated

by a fighting Indian team.

One player, Sonny Whitsell, received a hip
injury as a result of the physical contact.

Basketball

The 1974-75 Ranger basketball season proved to be one

of the most successful in the history of Northwest. This

winning season was primarily due to an outstanding

>roup of players, dedicated work shown by this team, and

an experienced and determined coach.

The Rangers earned an overall winning season, posting

victories over such teams as Dyersburg State, Shelby

State, Miss. Delta Junior College, Crowley Ridge, and

Northeast Miss, Junior College.

The season could be best summarized in the words of a
member of the team: "Our record speaks for itself."

events of competition and the ten teams competing, Northwest won first place in seven, second place in
one, and fourth place in two events. This is the first time the Ranger Track Team, going as the North Divi-
sion Champions, have won the state meet.

The field events team proved especially powerful winning twenty-four out of a possible thirty points in
the state meet. The field events and 440 and 880 relay teams were the strongest of events. The 880 this year
was undefeated and the quarter miler, Tommie Green, was also undefeated.

Out of the five meets the team participated in, they were the overall winners of four.
